What's the best way to get to Texel? (2023)

Texel is an island in the Wadden Sea, Netherlands. If you're planning a vacation in Texel, you should know in advance how to get there.

We arrived very peacefully by train, but the island can also be reached by car. The ferry terminal is in the port town of Den Helder and is well signposted. There is free parking if you don't want to drive to the island. To reach this car park, follow the signs for "P Texel", "Afhalen + Wegbrengen". If there is no free parking space at the ferry terminal, you can park for free near the Willemsoord P3 ferry terminal, about 10 minutes walk from the entrance.

Arrive Texel by train

Our train journey starts from Amsterdam Central Station with a regional train to Den Helder. The journey takes about 1.5 hours and you get off at the terminal station Den Helder.

You can only exit the station by going through the turnstiles and scanning the QR code on your ticket. If you have a Deutsche Bahn ticket, you must leave the platform without the QR code. However, there is a bell/call button for staff to help you open the turnstiles.

Arriving in Texel: Take the bus from the train station to the ferry in Den Helder.

The ferry terminal is 1.5 km from the station. Directly opposite the station is the bus stop, from where buses go directly to the ferry terminal.

The 33 bus runs according to the ferry departure times, so you can be sure to arrive on time for your cruise ship.

When we arrived at the ferry by bus, the boat had just arrived. The car had already left the boat, so we didn't need to worry, and we didn't have to look around, we went directly to the boat. We walked through the terminal to the ticket gate, then walked the long walkway to the ship. If you don't already have a ticket, you can also buy one at the box office or box office.

In fact, it's almost a shame that the transition period was so short. There is so much to discover and watch over time.
First, we calmly observe Den Helder's starting action. It was very moving to watch the hull approach and the ferry slowly leave the port.
